Eternal Fascism

Filed under: All, Religion & Secularism, USA Politics — Strident Centrist @ 10:52 am

I’ve been on the waiting list at the library for Chris Hedges’ American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America, but after I saw and heard Hedges on BookTV last weekend I decided to buy it. So a few days ago I “spent” the Barnes & Nobel gift card I had received from my future daughter-in-law (Thank you, Anne!) to buy it, and this morning I opened it for the first time.

The prologue is an essay by Umberto Eco entitled “Eternal Fascism: Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Blackshirt”, and I was powerfully struck by how much it resonates with what’s been going on in America these past few decades. I found this essay on a USA-based internet site devoted to Eco and his works. (I was going to paste the entire essay below in its entirety, however there are formatting issues in doing so that I don’t have time to resolve. So, you’ll have to follow the link.) If you’re interested in seeing the Chris Hedges BookTV segment, you’ll find a link to it here, but you’ll need a fat pipe.
